'eat air'
Tuesday, September 12, 2006 @ 4:21 PM

Travel/go on vacation literally translated from cantonese is 'eat air'. Eheehee..just came back from my Hong Kong trip yesterday. All we did was shop, eat, shop and eat. Walked a lot too.

Day 1: Upon our arrival, it was raining heavily. Fortunately, it kinda stopped when we arrived at the hotel. My first impression of HK, the 'not so clean', the more 'congested and crowded', and more 'chinese' (or rather cantonese) version of S'pore.

Went to Fa Yuen Street and Tung Choi Street (aka Ladies' Market) which are next to each other. In my opinion, skip Ladies' Market the next time coz it seems more like a tourist attraction. Fa Yuen Street is where the locals hang out so it's much more interesting.

Day 2: Fine day. Took the MTR to Central and walked (quite a distance) to Lin Heung Tea House to 'yum cha'. This place is highly recommended by the 2 guide books we have. When we arrived around 9.50am, it was already crowded but we managed to find seats.

Having dim sum in HK is rather interesting. Firstly, you have to share a table with strangers. Secondly, it's the traditional way to serving dim sum, they pushed trolleys around, calling out the names of the dishes. Thirdly, when the trolley with Paus come, you'll see a lot of people flocking to it (see pic below: all the people crowding around the poor waitress). You'll have to be real fast and kiasu or you may not get your pau.

Obviously, we joined in the fun too. The paus (dai pau, char siew, lotus paste) are real good! So many ingredients. And the char siew pau has real char siew...not pork fats!

After 'yum cha', went to Kee Wah to buy souvenirs(food). Then we made our way to Victoria Peak.

Breathtaking? Ermmm....nope, not enough (maybe shld go up in the evening to see the city lights). I went up to Mount Fuji before and we were way up above the clouds. That was breathtaking. But the tram ride up the peak was fun. It was extremely steep.

Thereafter, went to Wan Chai, Tai Yuen Street (the toy street where I bought Disney princess and Hello Kitty stuff for my niece) and Spring Garden Lane for more shopping. Of course, I didn't miss Espirit. Espirit outlet is in Tsim Tsha Tsui. Cheap cheap...the items are sold at 50-70% discount. In addition, you'll feel like you're back in S'pore coz there're many S'poreans there. Went to Granville Road in Tsim Tsha Tsui next, just behind our hotel. It's also an area not to be missed for budget shoppers.

Day 3: Extremely fine day 23-27 degrees. Felt like you're in an air-conditioned room.

Had their HK-Western style breakfast. The macaroni with ham was yummy. Hee...we even went to the bakery next door to get egg tart and Po Lo pau.

Had some time left. So we went to Wong Tai Sin Temple. Then my mum and I went back to Granville Road to do last minute shopping.

Last destination, we went to HK DisneyLand! Ahhahaa...no we didn't. But we were outside the theme park coz our tour coach had to drop off a couple.

Similar to S'pore, commutation in HK is very convenient. Remember to get your Octopus card at any MTR station so it saves you time from having to purchase the single trip ticket everytime you travel. It costs $150 HKD. The remaining value can be refunded when you return the card.

3-day trip is definitely too short. My parents didn't get to eat as much as they want. I didn't get to go to Causeway Bay to shop. I also didn't get to take as many pictures becoz I was so busy multi-tasking (shopping, holding the map to get directions, taking care of my bag etc.). Regardless, I went with 2 t-shirts and 1 pyjamas and came back with a luggage that is filled.
