Dumpling-making apprentice
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 @ 11:34 PM

It's Dumpling Festival today. Ehhh..nonono..sorry it's Dragon Boat Festival. During this period, we the Chinese who would eat dumplings in celebration of the festival. Some of us even make it ourselves. And my grandma is an expert at it. I'm not bragging, it's the truth. It's after years of experiment and info provided by her friends.

This is the 3rd consecutive year I've help out grandma. Spent the past week wrapping dumplings. I am the family's one and only and pathetic Dumpling-making Apprentice (where are the rest of the family?). Juz wrap wrap the dumplings. I don't know how to prepare the ingredients (or don't remember). Anyway, wrapping all the ingredients is an art liao. So many techniques to remember: complementary leaves, length and breadth of the leaves, amount of rice varies according to different types of dumplings, shape of the dumpling, where the ends should meet, leave gaps on the sides, cannot be too tight, cannot be too loose etc etc. So many nonsense but apparently they do affect the quality of the dumpling.

So it's the 3rd year liao, hey..I can say I master the skill really well k. (Don't belittle me, handicraft is my forte k!) But grandma still assigns me to the "kee" dumpling (the yellow one, we make it plain and with red bean also) coz it's easier. Haiya, I'm an ambitious girl. I wanna move on to bigger things! Grandma, let me wrap the "dunno-call-what but many ingredients" dumpling next year k!

P.S. no pics to prove I was making the dumpling coz don't hv so many hands to do so many things lah. And shall upload pics of how the dumplings look next time.
